In 1992 long time valley residents, the Herberger family, sold their 3200 acre ranch in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains to the Newhall Land & Farming Company, a California based Real Estate Development Co.  As part of that transaction it was stipulated that a portion of the land would go to the public domain.  In 1994 approximately 900 acres were donated to the City of Scottsdale to become part of the Sonoran Preserve which is located to the north of the present McDowell Mountain Ranch.

In 1994 McDowell Mountain Ranch received the support of the Scottsdale Planning Commission and the largest new development began under Scottsdale's Environmental Sensitivity and Landscape Ordinance which mandates the creation and maintenance of a minimum percentage of natural area ppen space (NAOS) for washes and open space corridors.

The result was this award winning Master Planned Community built between 1995 and 2003 with 26 neighborhoods and some 4000+ residences built around a five acre park and community center and heated pools and spas, tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, splash fountain and miles of improved trails connecting the neighborhoods to each other.

With two shopping centers and several business complexes, an ice arena,  private school to the north and Scottsdale's  Desert Canyon Elementary and Middle Schools, Scottsdale Arabian Library, the newer McDowell Mountain Aquatic Center and Scottsdale Citizens Service Center to the south, this community leaves little more to be desired!

Adjacent to McDowell Mountain Ranch is the public Santuary Golf Course at Westworld, a championship 18 hole course with a stunning 8500 S/F clubhouse, full service restaurant and pavillion for special events.

There were 155 properties sold in McDowell Mountain Ranch in 2008 ranging from a condo with 1093 SF for $280,000 to $1,850,000 for a 4972 single family home..
